SMT Production Lines
A Surface Mount Technology (SMT) production line is a basic setup for manufacturing electronic circuit boards using surface mount components. SMT is a widely used method in the electronics industry due to its efficiency and accuracy in assembling electronic devices. Here’s an overview of the components you would typically find in an entry-level SMT production line:
- Stencil Printer: The process begins with the stencil printer, which applies solder paste to the bare circuit board. The stencil is a metal sheet with openings that correspond to the locations of the SMT pads on the PCB. AMS offer a range of stencil printers ranging from manual to fully automatic.
- Pick and Place Machine: This machine is responsible for accurately placing surface mount components (such as resistors, capacitors, ICs, and other tiny parts) onto the PCB. The machine picks up the components from feeders and places them at their designated locations on the board using vision recognition systems. - Reflow Oven: Once all the components are accurately placed, the PCB moves through the reflow oven. The oven heats the board, melting the solder paste and soldering the components to the board. The temperature profile in the reflow oven is critical to ensure proper soldering without damaging the components or PCB. - Inspection Equipment: After reflow soldering, the boards go through inspection systems to check for any defects, such as missing components, misaligned parts, or soldering issues. Automated optical inspection (AOI) and/or in-circuit test (ICT) may be used for this purpose.
- Cleaning Equipment (Optional): In some cases, depending on the application and industry standards, the boards may undergo a cleaning process to remove any flux residue left after soldering. AMS supply and support the KEDtech range of cleaning equipment.
- Quality Control Stations: At various stages of the production line, there should be quality control stations where operators can inspect and verify the quality of the boards manually, especially for critical assemblies.

It’s important to note that an entry-level SMT production line would typically have manual intervention in various stages, and the production volume might be lower compared to fully automated high-volume SMT lines. As production demands increase, additional automation and sophisticated equipment can be incorporated to enhance productivity and reduce manufacturing costs.
